Oops...

When I was little, much younger than I am now (okay, until last year), I thought that snakes lived out the winter in little snake holes in the ground. Whenever I saw a round hole in the ground, it gave me the willies and I would step away from it as quickly as possible, because snakes freak me out more than almost anything else. It wasn't until a few months ago when I told Dad I saw a whole colony of snake holes, that he did a double-take. "What?"
"Snake holes! You know, snake burrows?" Still no flicker. "Snake homes? In the ground?"
He burst out laughing. "How do you think they would make them, Dänika?"
I guess I never thought it through that far. Worms can live in the ground; why can't snakes? I guess I never realized that they'd have to eat the dirt and then poop it out.

ROFL! Snake homes! ehehe. But really snakes do live in holes in the ground. They just don't dig them themselves. Gopher snakes we have in southern California go in and eat the gopher who owns the hole, and may stay in there a while, err digesting. Then move to the next. And rattlers collect together in burrows and holes and hibernate over the winter all coiled together to keep warmer. If it was a cold day, you could reach into the hole and drag out a big ball of hibernating rattlesnakes. Freaky thoughts.

I suppose that doesn't make you love holes in the ground anymore though. ;-D

hey di, I'm always saying stuff like that; I never used to put my foot in my mouth, but lately, it's been happening right and left. heh.

ooh, thanks courtney. just what I need. not a regular snake hole -- a huge hole with a mammal-eating beast curled up inside, err digesting. :P

At least it's in the ground and not a huge thing waiting in a tree to drop on you and squeeze you to death, as in Africa.
